New levels of service at Porcupine

Porcupine Press has developed a reputation for offering a high quality modular publishing service. What does ‘modular’ mean? In a nutshell, it means we don’t offer packages, but a range of services from which our writers can customise their special requirements.

Now, in a further response to the needs of writers who wish to self-publish, Porcupine is offering three different levels of our modular services. Here they are:

1.      Starter (DIY Publishing) – Own Imprint
Choosing this affordable option allows authors to get their work into print and distributed both locally and internationally via print-on-demand technologies. This option combines basic design elements with a low-cost distribution option, which makes it ideal for the production of family books, poetry and books not professionally edited or proofed.

2.      Basic (African Narratives Imprint)
Porcupine Press has designed this option especially for authors who cannot afford our professional publishing services. This option includes a risk sharing arrangement for books likely to be successful in the market. It also involves the author in the marketing and sale of her/his own book.

3.      Professional (Porcupine Imprint)
This option is suitable for authors who are serious about self-publishing and would like to have their book professionally published, marketed and distributed for the commercial market.

Also available are e-book conversions and marketing options, as well as a professional business production and distribution service for magazines, business reports, etc. Porcupine Press can reprint previously published books with new covers, additions, new ISBN number, or whatever is needed.

For more information, enquire via our website www.porcupinepress.co.za or telephone 011-7914561.

Porcupine author makes good in America

Dr Hannetjie van Zyl-Edeling’s book on positive ageing, Over the Moon, was published by Porcupine Press in March of this year. Now Van Zyl-Edeling has just (in August) signed a contract with an American publisher for another printing of her book in that country.

Naturally, Porcupine is over the moon about this turn of events. It’s what we’re in business for: to launch worthwhile books onto the national and international stages.

Did you know that people living past 100 years old are now the fastest growing age group in the world? Do you want to know how to join them? Van Zyl-Edeling’s book will tell you how. The Porcupine edition has already sold several hundred copies in South Africa and through Porcupine’s international distribution network, and remains available in good bookshops, as well as the big on-line stores, and also of course through our online shop at www.porcupinepress.co.za

Author to launch Over the Moon in Cape Town on 5 Sept in Parklands at 19h30pm and 9 Sept in Parow at 10h30am. If you interested please contact author Hannetjie van Zyl-Edeling directly.

Description of ‘Over the (Hill) Moon’:
Positive ageing is about maintaining physical, emotional, social and spiritual health as we age. It is about joy, love, learning, adapting, acceptance and continued connectedness.

In Over the Moon you will learn how to:
         Harness the power of your subconscious mind to realise the life you desire;
         Distinguish between wishful thinking and a positive attitude; and
         Gain control of your ageing process through the power of intention, mindfulness and other positive strategies.

Did you know that?
         Centenarians are the fastest growing age group world-wide;
         After retirement it is quite possible to have 35 more years between the ages of 65 and 100;
         You can protect your brain against age-related mental deterioration;
         You can influence how old you are and feel;
         Behaviour trumps genetics when it comes to influencing how you will age.

Over the Moon is about breaking out of old patterns of thinking and being, and taking charge of your life and ageing process. It is never too early or too late to make positive changes.

My association with Porcupine has introduced me to a lot of fascinating people

David Robbins
Writers mostly. I have never known very many. For various reasons I've lived in isolation for long periods of my life. Over the years, though, I've accumulated some acquaintances who were writers and publishers, and a few of them have become my friends. So for me the Porcupine experience is quite new. The sheer volume of manuscripts that I look at, each one with a complete life behind it, talks not of isolation but of shared aspirations and potential friendships. Often the manuscripts encourage me to meet with the authors. I don't think these meetings have ever failed to be mutually beneficial. So much so that I've decided to offer one-on-one writing courses, specially designed to fit with each writer's special interest, be it fiction, non-fiction, travel, biography, memoirs and institutional histories. I'm preparing to learn from these encounters just as much as I can teach.

Go to the Porcupine Press website to find out more.

Meanwhile, in the future, I'll be blogging briefly about some of the new friends I've made and what they are attempting to achieve. Come and join the Porcupine family.
