Books can change lives: Porcupine donates

Porcupine Press, and Porcupine authors, have donated more than 40 books to the Alexandra Community Library.  The value of this gift is in the region of R6000.

An initiative by the staff of Nedbank’s head office staff to celebrate Mandela Day on 18 July 2013 set out to donate reading material to the library which is situated in greater Johannesburg’s most crowded township. The initiative was called ’67 books can change a life’. Thanks to a personal connection between Porcupine and the Nedbank head office, Porcupine and its authors came up with more than half the target of 67.

The appeal for books quoted Nelson Mandela as saying: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.’

‘Porcupine is well aware of that,’ says Porcupine general manager, Clare-Rose Julius. ‘We’re in the process of editing a book about growing up in Alexandra, and we’ll make sure that a few copies find their way into the library in Alex. It’s so important that people are given plenty of opportunities to read about their own realities.’
